L-3 AVISYS' DIRCM (Directed Infrared Countermeasures) turret, in the final R&D phase of commercialization, will provide a low-cost and highly reliable alternative to development laser tracking systems of several other defense contractors.

L-3 AVISYS' DIRCM laser pointer turret provides the following features:

Pointer Laser Tracker: This system uses a pointer laser tracker. These features allow the use of a narrow laser beam for high jam to signal performance. Previous simulations and live fire tests have proven the merit of a pointer laser tracker.

Low System Cost: A low system cost will support widespread usage with the associated lower unit costs and increased opportunity for upgrade and improvement as the laser and tracking technology matures. This feature will put the power of DIRCM into the hands of the HOS, VIP, Commercial and Military customers seaching for an affordable system to defend their aircraft fleets.

Low Installation Cost: Again, a lower installation cost means that the system will be affordable for a wider range of platforms. The L-3 AVISYS DIRCM system's relatively self-contained design supports a low installation cost.

High reliability and low maintenance: The relatively few moving parts and the self-contained nature of the design lead to a highly reliable and low maintenance design. This model of high reliability and low maintenance directly supports a low total ownership cost.

Low Size and Weight: The small size of the system contributes to a low overall system weight with the associated lower impacts on platform fuel consumption, range, and take-off performance. In addition, a low size and weight support a low installation cost and lowimpact for the aircraft platform.

Minimum Platform Drag: The capability to trade off airstream protrusion with FOV (Field-of-View) allows for a goal of minimal impact on platform drag characteristics to be considered. Note that the trade offs range from flush to approximately 1.5 inch protrusion. The 1.5 inch protrusion provides a full one half sphere FOV.

Separate Optical Path: The separate optical paths for the laser and the tracker reduce backscatter problems and allow a more powerful laser to be combined with a very sensitive tracker. In addition, the tracker and the laser can operate in the same band.

Fast Slew: The small size and weight of the system allow for a very fast slew response to missile detection and tracking commands. This fast slew time will allow threat response with a very short engagement time and the ability to address multiple threats.

Low Jitter: The basic design with few moving parts and self contained optical paths will allow for a very low jitter in the system. This low jitter will allow the use of a smaller laser.

L-3 AVISYS' DIRCM solution will provide a high quality, low-cost solution to the growing MANPADS threat. This DIRCM solution can be fully integrated with our successfully-fielded WIPPS (Widebody Integrated Platform Protection System). L-3 AVISYS is the clear leader in the integration and fielding of aircraft self-protection systems.

L-3 AVISYS' remote sensing team has expert experience with lasers and the associated pointing systems (turrets) for aircraft countermeasures systems.

L-3 AVISYS worked closely with the developers of a raw laser diode semiconductor material to specify and integrate compact lasers into remote sensing systems. L-3 AVISYS' successful remote sensing projects required a close working relationship with the laser manufacturers to insure that the correct lasers were grown for specific application(s). L-3 AVISYS has an intimate knowledge of the integration requirements to provide the necessary infrastructure for the laser in a specific system. This experience translates directly to working with the laser manufacturers to create a laser for the remote sensing application and integrating these lasers into a remote sensing system.

L-3/AVISYS has developed a low cost turret with a refined pointing system, part of a directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) system, to support integration for aircraft self-protection. During the development of this turret, and during the development of laser modules for remote sensing applications, the usefulness of a low cost turret for the remote sensing application became clear. In particular, the remote sensing application requires many of the same capabilities as the DIRCM application: the capability to direct a sensor at a particular object of interest and direct some type of sensor output/input to provide the remote measurement capability.
