L-3 Electron Devices Wins Emmy® Award for Pioneering Development of MSDC High Power Amplifiers

L-3 Electron Device Division in Williamsport, Pa., was awarded an Emmy® Award for its pioneering work in the development of its MSDC IOT amplifier tube, the CEA at the 61st Annual Technology and Engineering Awards, held during the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

L-3 Electron Devices was honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for its innovative technology, the CEA, noting the significant impact that this technological achievement will have on the television industry.  The CEA offers significantly improved efficiency over standard transmitting tube technology, allowing broadcasters to achieve as much as twice the power efficiency of standard IOTs.

“The CEA tube, manufactured at the L-3 Electron Devices facility in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, is the most significant development in transmitter technology in more than a decade,” said Jim Benham, President of L-3 Electron Devices. “The efficiency benefits – and the dramatic cost savings that go with it – are going to be a significant boon to the operations of local television stations that are now transmitting digital TV.”

Combining proven IOT and Multi Stage Depressed Collector (MSDC) technologies for superior electron collection efficiency, the CEA reduces power consumption by about one-half compared with other electron tube or solid-state technology.  Correctable average power output of 30 kW has been demonstrated, matching the power available from conventional IOTs.  The collector is oil-cooled using Poly Alpha Olefin oil, which allows operation at high average power.

Launched in 1948, The Technology and Engineering Awards honor development and innovation in broadcast technology and recognize companies, organizations and individuals for breakthroughs in technology that have a significant effect on television engineering.

“These are truly dynamic and exciting times for the television industry, and these Emmy® winners were rewarded for their significant impact in enhancing the consumer viewing experience,” said Herb Granath, Chairman, NATAS.  “Of this esteemed group, we are pleased to commend technology and engineering professional who contribute to the on-going development of television, year after year.”
