The safety requirements of a rocket
motor Ignition Safety Device (ISD) are defined in
revision A of MIL-STD-1901. MIL-STD-1901A now requires
the use of an ISD device
for all new motor designs. Fuzing & Ordnance Systems (formerly L-3 KDI Precision Products) has developed in-line
ISD devices, which eliminate the
use of any moving parts. These designs are based on the
same technology that has made
in-line warhead fuzing so successful. Fuzing & Ordnance Systems' (formerly L-3 KDI Precision Products) line
of motor ISD’s offer enhanced safety
that is not achievable with the older out-of-line designs.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A key component of the new designs is
the Exploding Foil
Deflagrating Initiator (EFDI). This component initiates
in the
same manner as the LEEFI devices now used for insensitive
high voltage detonators, but develops a deflagrating
output using
BKNO3. Reynolds Systems developed this critical component
in cooperation with Fuzing & Ordnance Systems (formerly L-3 KDI Precision Products) and the Naval Air Warfare Center
Weapons Division (NAWC) China Lake. Various versions
of the
device exist that can be tailored to particular applications
requiring various pressure ratings and output pressure
levels.
Static firing tests were successfully
conducted, on several Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM)
Motors, at NAWCWD.
Fuzing & Ordnance Systems (formerly L-3 KDI Precision Products) is currently under contract for the development of
an ISD
for the Army GMLRS and the Kinetic Warhead Stage of the
SM-3 Standard Missile. |
