NEPTUNE Canada is currently the world’s largest cable-linked seafloor observatory. The network is an approximately 800 kM fiber optic ring with 6 science nodes at selected sites of scientific interest on the northern portion of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate, a 200,000 sq km region in the northeast Pacific off the coasts of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. The shore station is located at Port Alberni, BC, Canada.
The system will expand the boundaries of ocean exploration and give oceanographers a new way of studying and understanding our oceans. Continuous near-real-time multidisciplinary measurements will extend over 25 years. Major research themes include: structure and seismic behavior of the ocean crust; dynamics of hot and cold fluids and gas hydrates in the upper ocean crust and overlying sediments; ocean/climate change and effects on ocean
biota/fisheries at all depths; deep-sea sedimentation, ecosystem dynamics and biodiversity; and engineering and computational systems research.
L-3 MariPro engineers, under subcontract to Alcatel-Lucent, designed, qualified, integrated and system tested the trawl resistant frame and science node for the University of Victoria.
