The Regional Scale Nodes (RSN) is a component of the National Science Foundation's (NSF’s) Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The NSF’s OOI is managed and coordinated by the OOI Project Office at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (COL) in Washington, D.C.
The University of Washington (UW), one of the preeminent research universities in the world, located in Seattle, Washington, is the RSN Implementing Organization for the COL. The concept of a regional cabled ocean observatory was nurtured and developed at UW, a vision based upon decades of experience in at-sea research in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
L-3 MariPro will design, qualify, build and install the RSN primary infrastructure for the UW. The primary infrastructure network consists of a single shore facility in Pacific City Oregon, two cable lines with nearly 800kM of fiber-optic cable and seven primary science nodes on the southern portion of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate in the Northeast Pacific ocean. Initial capacity of the RSN system will be delivery of up to 200kW of power and 240Gbps of TCP/IP Internet data communications to the seven primary science nodes. The 25-year life system will allow for significant expansion capabilities to serve future science needs and technological advances with minimal impact to the initially installed primary infrastructure.
