Meeting the ASW Challenge in the Hostile Environment
The modern conventional submarine has achieved remarkable advances
in mobility and endurance, sensor capability, armament and stealth.
Passive sensors have become inadequate to contain the submarine threat:
only low frequency active sonar technology can do the job.
Ocean Systems: Pioneer of Low Frequency Tactical Sonar
Traditional Low Frequency VDS equipment is very cumbersome,
heavy, and expensive.
A convergence of technologies pioneered by Ocean Systems for over
25 years, has allowed the fielding of tactical towed and dipping sonars
operating at less than 1.5kHz whose awesome performance is matched by truly
small size and weight, and affordable cost. These sonars, the Low Frequency
Active Towed Sonar (LFATS) and the Helicopter Long Range Active Sonar
(HELRAS), are turning the tide against all submarine threat,
in all environments.
LFATS and HELRAS
LFATS and HELRAS can operate independently, or jointly in bistatic mode for
enhanced performance and tactical advantage.
LFATS
A four-ton, 1.38kHz, CZ-capable, VDS sonar system for all types of
combatants and patrol vessels. Excellent shallow water performance
even against small, quiet, slow targets.
HELRAS
1.38kHz version of the AQS-18A, HELRAS is CZ-capable
and an excellent performer in shallow waters against all threat, yet still
easily fits onboard an SH-70 or an SH-3. HELRAS is the selection of the It.
Navy for its EH-101 and NH-90.
