L-3 Communications Space & Navigation Awarded Multi-Year Contract

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 2003--L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Space & Navigation division (L-3 S&N) has been selected by the Army and Marine Corps Surveyors to receive a competitively-awarded contract for the provision of the Improved Position and Azimuth Determining System (IPADS), replacing the currently fielded Position and Azimuth Determining System (PADS). L-3 S&N's initial contract is valued at $2.65 million and provides for 11 sets of Test Hardware and Test Support necessary to prepare for a Full Rate Production decision. Total contract value, including production options, is estimated to exceed $70 million through the year 2009.

L-3 S&N's Compact Tactical Surveyor (CATS) will provide the Army and Marine Corps Surveyors with the capability to seamlessly adopt technological improvements that enhance reliability and increase crew survivability by decreasing the time needed to accomplish its missions. The CATS is built around the high precision accuracy of the Position Navigation Unit (PNU), which incorporates L-3's Ring Laser Gyroscope (RLG)-based navigation and pointing system for the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). Applying core competencies in guidance and navigation, software development, situational awareness and systems integration, L-3S&N integrated its PNU with other key components to provide an order of magnitude improvement in reliability and enhanced performance and functionality over the current system.

"This is a major competitive win for L-3 S&N and clearly demonstrates our ability to take legacy products and adapt them to today's requirements in a timely and cost effective manner," said Paul Wengen, president of L-3 Communications Space and Navigation. "The CATS product gives us another off-the-shelf product that addresses domestic and international needs by supplying the most accurate and user-friendly surveying system available. This award is particularly significant because it represents the culmination of intensive and constant focus on the needs and desires of the customer and the user: the Soldier and Marine in the field. It's the same focus we have applied to our MLRS customer and will continue to apply as we pursue related roles on the U.S. Army's Future Combat System."

L-3S&N is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high precision guidance, navigation, weapons pointing and fire control products and services for applications from the ground to outer space. Its capabilities include situational awareness, system/subsystem integration, digital mapping, inertial navigation, platform stabilization, and software development.
