The CXS-2000 FAST Adds DSP Capabilities to L-3's Growing Line
of Space Products
San Diego, CA, April 9, 2002 - The Conic enterprise of L-3
Communications' (NYSE:LLL) newly formed Telemetry-West division
announced today that it is introducing the CXS-2000 Flexible
Architecture Secure Transponder (FAST), a multi-purpose, high-performance
TT&C transponder for use on board today's latest technology
high reliability satellites. L-3's CXS-2000 FAST builds on
the successful heritage of the CXS-810C Secure Space Ground
Link System (SGLS) Transponder now flying on a military satellite
and the CXS-620C Secure Unified S-Band (USB) Transponder developed
for future DoD/USAF missions requiring interoperability with
the new Unified S-Band standard. L-3 Telemetry-West is currently
under contract to provide the FAST for an undisclosed U.S.
military satellite program and is accepting orders for all
future generation satellites.
The CXS-2000 FAST is capable of operating in multiple modes
and across different frequency bands while conserving valuable
satellite resources. The FAST replaces other assemblies on
the satellite, resulting in dramatic savings in weight, volume,
DC power and cost. It gives customers the ability to communicate
between multiple ground stations using on-the-fly commandable
formats. This newly developed unit provides a secure link
to receive and authenticate commands, send telemetry and maintain
coherent tracking of critical spaceborne assets.
"Our
new CXS-2000 FAST builds on the tremendous heritage of L-3's
TT&C transponders flying on dozens of classified, military,
civil and commercial spacecraft and provides the flexibility
required by today's satellite systems," said Glenn Flaherty,
director of marketing for space products at L-3 Telemetry-West.
"Demand for this capability is strong, with several customers
baselining our FAST for future missions."
The
CXS-2000 FAST is the latest concept in secure transponding
modems. It is a programmable, multi-mode unit for use with
various systems, including SGLS and USB, that operates directly
at L- and S-bands as a standalone transponder or with separate
up/downconverters at X, Ku and Ka-band frequencies. With standard
features that include ranging, coherency, direct modulation,
BPSK, QPSK, subcarrier modulation and a 1553 interface, L-3's
FAST meets the communication needs of the entire satellite
industry. The radiation hardened unit includes embedded encryption/decryption
within a single, compact package.
