L-3 Communications Wins Contract to Provide Test Systems for European Space Agency Program
March 6, 2000

NEW YORK, NY, March 6, 2000--L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Telemetry & Instrumentation (L-3 T&I) division has been awarded a contract from Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) for satellite test systems to support all phases of test and integration for the SMART-1 spacecraft the company is building for the European Space Agency (ESA). The award demonstrates L-3 T&I's expertise in supporting international space agency requirements for flexible, interoperable satellite ground system products.

"We were looking for a proven, low-cost test system with CCSDS space link capabilities," said SSC's SMART-1 Assembly, Integration and Verification Manager Ms. Åsa Jordung. "L-3 T&I has, with their GroundWorks™ integrated product solution, satisfactorily complied with our tough requirements on cost, delivery time, functionality and support."

The GroundWorks™ solution for the SMART-1 spacecraft marks the debut of L-3 T&I's powerful new Vista™ telemetry processing and display software. Vista™ will interface with the Impact 2000™ CCSDS processing system and display measurements in real time from the spacecraft's on-board systems. The products will also be used to format and transmit commands from Swedish Space Corporation's software to the spacecraft. CCSDS is an emerging standard for telemetry and command links that uses networking concepts similar to Internet protocols, but is adapted to the unique conditions of satellite communications.

"We are committed to adding value to all of our product deliveries and are proud to be part of Swedish Space Corporation's solution for SMART-I," Mr. Jones continued. "Our selection for this project was based on our GroundWorks™ integrated product strategy, through which L-3 can bundle separate ground system capabilities into a seamless, low-cost solution."

SMART-1 is a small lunar orbiter and is the first in ESA's new line of Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology to demonstrate advanced technologies for future deep space missions. The spacecraft will be launched late 2002.
