L-3 Communications Selected To Supply Telemetry Systems For Patuxent River's NAWC Telemetry Facility

September 13, 2000

NEW YORK, NY, September 13, 2000 -- L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Telemetry & Instrumentation (L-3 T&I) division has been selected to supply its System 550 real-time telemetry ground systems as key components in the upgrade of the Real-Time Telemetry Processing System (RTPS IV) facility for the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC). The initial order is valued at $1 million, with significant follow-on orders expected in 2001. System deliveries are slated for the third quarter of this year.

L-3's System 550 was selected as the best technical solution for the RTPS IV upgrade after a year-long competitive analysis showed it offered superior real-time processing capabilities and could handle the facility's high-performance requirements. The System 550s will be used to test a host of new and existing aircraft and missile systems, helping the facility support as many as eight flight tests simultaneously.

"We faced severe throughput limitations with our existing system and needed to upgrade our capabilities to support today's increasingly sophisticated flight test missions," said Walt Sidorovich, electronics engineer at Patuxent River. "The System 550 delivers a performance improvement of a factor of ten and provides an open architecture that makes it easy for us to get exactly the data we need."

Patuxent River will be one of the first customers to utilize the System 550's new PMC Decom module, which supports an unprecedented four PCM telemetry streams from a single VME slot. Thanks to its compact size, the PMC Decom saves system resources and delivers greater flexibility, all while supporting higher data rates than conventional decommutators.

"For over ten years, L-3 T&I has been providing Patuxent River NAWC with a wide range of telemetry components and systems," said Mike Testa, L-3's program manager of the RTPS IV contract. "We are pleased to continue that partnership by delivering a proven System 550 solution that offers Pax River higher performance, complete scalability and intimate customer support over the long term."
